Brilliant Bluecoats
By Ben Brown
Great Torrington Bluecoat Primary School stormed to victory at the GTS Football Festival on Wednesday 15th January, achieving a 100%-win record in the process.
The members of the tournament winning squad included: Oscar, Seb (Captain), Honey, Poppy, George, Sophie, Finley, Madison, Reuben and Albie.
The team started off strongly, defeating Bradworthy 3-1 in their opening game with
Dawson, Stanton and Hearn grabbing the goals. They would carry this early confidence into their second game against St. Helens (A), putting in a brilliant performance and were deserved 6-0 victors. A Stanton hat-trick, McNicholas brace and Drayton’s composed strike were the goal scorers there. Six would prove to be the team’s lucky number on the day, as their next two games against St. Helens (B) and Monkleigh ended in the same score line. Stanton adding a further four goals to his tally, Dawson scoring another two and individual strikes from Amey, Pascoe, Rush, Hearn, Huxtable and McNicholas highlighted the impressive togetherness of the team and how everyone was playing a significant part in their success.
The final game of the competition saw the team come up against familiar opposition in Langtree. In a closely fought encounter, Bluecoat’s came out on top winning 2-0 thanks to another two goals from the impressive Dawson and a superb keeping performance from Wood in goal, who only conceded one goal in the five games played. The win resulted in the team being crowned champions on the day and they will now advance to the North Devon Schools Tournament later on in the year.
Coaches Millie Hallet and Ben Brown could not be prouder of the children. Their performances on the pitch were outstanding but also their attitudes and level of respect shown to each other and the opposition was a privilege to see.
A brilliant effort from the entire squad and one they should be massively proud of!
