At our school, we believe that academic success and emotional intelligence go hand in hand. We are currently trialling a Social Literacy Curriculum (SLC), a comprehensive journey designed to equip our students with the "mechanics of human empathy" and the practical social skills they need to thrive in the modern world.
The SLC is a structured, assembly-based program that moves beyond basic manners. It focuses on Social Intelligence — the ability to navigate complex social environments with kindness, confidence, and awareness.
By teaching universal "social scripts," we provide our youngest learners with concrete behaviors to mimic, while giving our older students the tools to refine their interpersonal leadership.
Every Wednesday morning, the whole school gathers for a 15–20 minute interactive session. We use a "sandwich" teaching method to keep all ages engaged:
The Hook: Teachers perform live "skits" demonstrating the wrong way to handle a social situation—which always guarantees a laugh!
The 'Why': We explain the social impact of our actions (e.g., "When we walk loudly, we steal the focus of others").
The Practice: Students from Year 1 and Year 6 model the right way to interact.
The Wednesday Challenge: Every session ends with a "Mission" for the week, such as holding a door open or greeting five people by name.
In an increasingly digital age, the ability to "read a room," practice impulse control, and show genuine gratitude is more important than ever. The SLC helps our students move from simple social intelligence to active Social Action—learning to spot someone on the fringes and bring them into the fold.
We invite you to talk to your children about their Wednesday Challenge and join us in building a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and respected.
Please note: As our curriculum develops, we will endeavour to update the curriculum on our webpage.
