Geography at Bluecoat...
Our pupils receive a high-quality geography education that inspires a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. This will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
Intent
We believe that Geography plays a unique and vital role in a child’s education. As such we:
use the Curriculum Maestro scheme to provide knowledge-rich teaching that has progression, consistency and breadth of coverage relevant to the National Curriculum
ensure that all children have access to the geography curriculum and develop an understanding and awareness of the world around them and their place in it
teach children to value, respect and celebrate the diverse cultures, religions and languages that they may encounter throughout their lives and be inspired to explore and experience it where opportunities arise
appoint Eco-Ambassadors, who represent their classes and are valued to enrich the curriculum through pupil voice
aim to create proactive global citizens who positively contribute to the society in which they live, including living sustainably
aim for our children to grow up knowing about the world in which they live and developing an understanding of their responsibilities as global citizens (part of our global partnerships)
Implementation
We implement the Geography modules/themes in weekly sessions throughout two terms, however many geographical links in other subjects are taken advantage of all year round, e.g. in History, invaders and settlers incorporate the origins of the invaders, what their homelands are like and their reasons for moving
We provide real-life experiences in local, regional and European contexts that enable pupils to have the opportunity to apply their learning and bring about memorable, meaningful and purposeful experiences
We provide pupils with the opportunity to engage, develop, innovate and express their geographical understanding in line with Curriculum Maestro
We plan and deliver a variety of types of lessons that give different learners the tools to succeed. This includes opportunities for self-directed, enquiry based, investigative and comparing and contrasting learning experiences
Maestro enables all children to access and be taught the same curriculum and is adapted through teaching strategies and resources to meet specific pupil needs
We ensure that during the planning process, resources, contexts, links and educational visits are purposeful, safe, practical and appropriate
Teachers are able to confidently deliver the Geography curriculum through acquiring support and advice when necessary to fulfil the required subject knowledge needed
Impact
By the end of Chapter 3 (Key Stage 2), pupils will have covered the National Curriculum objectives using the Maestro Curriculum Resource. The coverage of the Key Stage 2 curriculum will prepare children for their next stage in Key Stage 3
Pupils will be able to make links with prior learning through revisiting concepts each year in Geography and in other curriculum areas
Pupils will be able to build on their knowledge and understanding from the progression and coverage year on year
Coverage is monitored by subject leads, which alongside book scrutiny and pupil voice, forms a triangle of evidence to show the Impact of teaching and learning
